Summary

Italian Spirits sector accounted for a volume share of 0.7% of the global market and 8.6% of the regional (Western Europe) market, in 2016. The sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.3% during 2016-2021. Government regulations and campaigns to bring down alcohol consumption, and rising health consciousness among consumers are limiting the growth of the sector. Per capita consumption stood at 3.23 liters compared to the global and Western Europe levels of 6.37 liters and 5.71 liters, respectively, in 2016.

Brandy was the largest with value sales of €2,205.2 Million (US$2,437.9 Million) in 2016. Tequila & Mezcal is expected to grow the fastest at a CAGR of 3.1% compared to Brandy (1.3%), Gin & Genever, Liqueurs, Rum (0.3%), Specialty Spirits, Vodka, and Whiskey (2.7%).

Hypermarkets & Supermarkets accounted for the largest volume share of 24.2% in the distribution of Spirits. It was followed by On-trade transactions and Food & Drinks Specialists with shares of 21.8% and 17.6%, respectively, in the same year. Glass is the most commonly used package material in the Italian Spirits sector. In 2016, it accounted for a volume share of 99.3%, followed by Flexible Packaging and Rigid Plastics with shares of 0.36% and 0.33% respectively.
