Summary

Dutch Spirits sector accounted for a volume share of 0.18% of the global market and 2.37% of the regional (Western Europe) market, in 2016. The sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.6% during 2016-2021. Consumer preference for low-alcoholic beverages coupled with rising health awareness and levy of taxes on high-alcohol products are the factors attributing to the minimal growth of the sector in the country. Per capita consumption stood at 3.31 liters compared to the global and Western Europe levels of 6.4 liters and 5.71 liters, respectively, in 2016.

Whiskey was the largest with value sales of €607.2 Million (US$671.3 Million) in 2016 and is expected to grow the fastest at a CAGR of 7% compared to Brandy, Liqueurs, Rum (2.5%), Specialty Spirits), Tequila & Mezcal, and Vodka (3.1%).

On-trade transactions accounted for the largest volume share of 35.5% in the distribution of Spirits. It was followed by Hypermarkets & Supermarkets and Food & Drinks Specialists with shares of 30.4% and 22.4%, respectively, in the same year. Glass is the most commonly used package material in the Dutch Spirits sector. In 2016, it accounted for a volume share of 99.23%, followed by Rigid Metal and Rigid Plastics with shares of 0.72% and 0.05% respectively.

Consumption of Spirits was higher among the male population in 2016 compared to females. Consumption of Spirits was also high among the Dutch consumers who received Tertiary education.
