Summary

Global liquids storage capacity is expected to grow by 5.5% during 2017-2021, from 5,517 million barrels (mmbbl) in 2017 to 5,819 mmbbl in 2021. Among regions, Asia, the Middle East, and North America lead globally with most planned liquids storage capacity additions of 170 mmbbl, 80 mmbbl, and 57 mmbbl, respectively, by 2021.

In Asia, China has the most planned liquids storage capacity additions and capital expenditure (capex) spending by 2021. The country is expected to add a storage capacity of 71 mmbbl, and spend US$4.6 Billion as capex by 2021. In the Middle East, Oman has the most planned additional storage capacity with 32 mmbbl by 2021. More than half of the region’s capex to develop planned storage facilities is in Iran (US$1.6 Billion) and the United Arab Emirates (US$1.2 Billion) over the next four years.

In terms of capex, China Petrochemical Corp leads globally among the companies. The company is expected to spend US$2.1 Billion, followed by China Huaxin Energy Ltd and Korea National Oil Corporation, both with US$1.6 Billion. Hainan III in China has the highest capex spending globally among the planned storage terminals during 2017-2021. Hainan III has capex of US$1,287 million, followed by Jask in Iran and Ulsan XIII in South Korea with US$1,044 million and US$750 million, respectively.

The Ras Markaz Crude Oil Park and Lawe-Lawe CCT lead globally among terminals in terms of planned storage capacity additions. Each of the terminals has a planned storage capacity of 25 mmbbl. Ras Markaz Crude Oil Park is located in Oman and is expected to start operations in 2017, while Lawe-Lawe CCT is in Indonesia and could start operations in 2021. Among companies, Brightoil Petroleum (Holdings) Limited has the most oil storage capacity globally with 32 mmbbl, followed by Oman Oil Company SAOC (31 mmbbl) and China Petrochemical Corp (29 mmbbl).

A 5.5% growth is expected in the global liquids storage capacity during 2017-2021 outlook period. Asia drives the growth over the next four years, followed by the Middle East. In Asia, China leads the region both in terms of capacity growth and capital spending. Indonesia, the US and Oman are the other major countries to witness considerable growth in capacity and capital spending.
