Venture capital is a source of financing for new businesses that have limited operating history and are unable to raise capital through debt issuance. It is a form of private equity involving financing provided to small and early stages of firms with high growth potential or those already showing high growth rate. In return, venture capitalists receive an ownership stake in the invested company. Most start-ups are usually from hi-tech industries such as IT and biotechnology. The major lead venture investment is done in the initial seed funding round. Mostly, the venture capital comes from investment banks, wealthy investors, and other financial institutions that pool such investments.

Wealth in Hong Kong: HNW Investors 2017

Wealth in Hong Kong: HNW Investors 2017 Summary Hong Kong private wealth market is an attractive mix of East and West. Its long-established nature makes it larger and more diversified than is common in the rest of Asia Pacific. Local HNW investors have mainly sourced their wealth through a mixture of entrepreneurship and earned income. Convenience is an important factor driving uptake of professional advice, but investors are reluctant to relinquish control completely, preferring advisory mandates. However, this is slowly changing as we are seeing greater uptake of discretionary mandates, in part driven by expats. Critical success factors - Target expats: The Hong Kong HNW market has a large expat component and providers need to be able to onboard these much sought-after clients. This r......

The Cards and Payments Industry in Russia: Emerging Trends and Opportunities to 2020

The Cards and Payments Industry in Russia: Emerging trends and opportunities to 2020 Summary Cash is the preferred payment instrument in Russia, accounting for 60.3% of total transaction volume in 2016. But despite economic turmoil the Russian payment card market grew substantially in terms of both volume and value during the review period (2012-16). The uptake of electronic payments can be attributed mainly to government initiatives such as financial inclusion programs, regulations to cap cash payments, and the introduction of the National Payment Card System (NPCS). In October 2013, the Russian Ministry of Finance introduced regulation that dictates retailers with annual sales of over $1.0m (RUB60m) are required to install point of sale (POS) terminals to accept card payments. In addit......

Consumer Payments Country Snapshot: Germany 2016

Consumer Payments Country Snapshot: Germany 2016 Summary Payment cards are used sparingly at the point of sale (POS), and the German POS network is among the least developed in Europe. The German maxim is "geld stinkt nicht" (literally "money doesn't stink") - consumers consider cash to still be the best available option due to a combination of ingrained consumer habits and the German cultural preferences for spending within one's means. As a result, alternative payment methods are sharply limited in both usage and consumer interest. Less than 10% of German consumers held a revolving credit card in 2015, and of those 80% paid off their balances in full each month. The opportunity for credit card revenue in Germany is thus sharply limited, and there would need to be a seismic shift in th......

Consumer Payments Country Snapshot: Denmark 2016

Consumer Payments Country Snapshot: Denmark 2016 Summary Denmark is increasing its efforts to become a cashless society, backed by government support in promoting electronic payments. Danish consumers are very comfortable with payment cards and mobile phones, with Dankort the most commonly used card scheme in the country and MobilePay leading the way in peer-to-peer (P2P) payments. In spite of mobile proximity and contactless payments remaining underdeveloped, there is opportunity for providers to emphasize relevant use cases and advantages over traditional payment tools in order to boost interest and gain significant adoption among mass consumers. While credit cards account for 19% of cards in issue, they are used more than seven times less frequently at the point of sale (POS) than de......

UK Pensions Market 2017

UK Pensions Market 2017 Summary Pre- and post-retirement markets have seen some big changes over the last few years. The state pension has been changed from a two-tier to a flat-rate model to relieve pressure on the government, as the UK population is aging and individuals are living longer. Auto-enrolment will continue to be a big driver of growth in work- and trust-based pensions, as will buyouts as employers look to de-risk. By February 2018, all businesses will have to provide a pension to eligible employees, and by April 2019 the total minimum contribution will be 8%. New pension freedoms have given customers more flexibility in how they take money from their pensions. Critical success factors - Technology and robo-advice: Technology must be used to help clients with smaller pensio......

The Cards and Payments Industry in Mexico: Emerging trends and opportunities to 2020

The Cards and Payments Industry in Mexico: Emerging trends and opportunities to 2020 Summary Cash remains the preferred form of consumer payments in Mexico; especially among the rural population, primarily due to limited knowledge of payment cards or limited access to banking infrastructure. Cash is primarily used for making small-value payments at retailers, and for the payment of utility bills, taxes, and transport fares. A significant proportion of the population is engaged in informal activities, including farmers, street vendors, domestic servants, and self-employed workers. Debit cards have grown in prominence on account of the introduction of electronic payroll services, an increase in the banked population, and the government's distribution of social welfare funds through cards.......
