Summary

Mexico’s population of 122M makes it the second-largest country in Latin America, after Brazil. It is expected that Mexico’s population to grow at a CAGR of 1.1% over the 2017-2022 period, reaching 130M. Mexico’s nominal GDP will decline to US$992BN before starting to expand again in 2018. Mexico’s economy is the second largest in Latin America, after Brazil.

Uncertainty over US trade policies will contribute to weak economic growth of 1.2% in 2017 and 1.8% in 2018. It will slow in 2019 before picking up from 2020 as investment recovers and the benefits from structural reform materialize. Inflation will remain above the 2-4% target in 2017 before gradually easing as the effect of the recent petrol price increases fades.

Mexican government launched the Estrategia Digital Nacional (National Digital Strategy) in November 2013 to encourage investment in the sector and stimulate adoption of telecom services. The five-year plan aims to reduce the digital gap in the country and improve the GDP growth rate through increased adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) services.

It is expected that the telecommunications and pay-TV services revenue in Mexico to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% between 2017 and 2022, one of the fastest growth rates projected for the region. Growth will be driven by increased competition between more evenly sized players, as Grupo Televisa and AT&T expand their presence to challenge Telmex/Telcel. We also expect the buildout and commercialization of Altan’s Red Compartida LTE wholesale network, as well as the Red Troncal fiber-optic backbone owned by CFE, to drive increases in penetration and usage.
