Fuel prices began to increase in Switzerland and in Europe, the price of petrol in 2016 rose by 12.9%, and diesel prices grew by 14.8%. As of 2016, 40.2% of service stations in Switzerland featured a shop. The total number of service stations with a shop declined by 3.5% about 1,377 sites. The top five fuel retailers in Switzerland accounted for 56.7% of the number of service station shops in the country. COOP is the leading player in the service station shop market, with 95.3% of its 234 sites featuring a shop. 16.2% of all service station sites with a shop are COOP branded.
21.0% of service stations in Switzerland feature a car wash. The total number of service stations with a car wash in Switzerland marginally rose by 1.2% to 718 sites as retailers started to invest in these facilities. Shell has the largest number of service stations with a car wash in the country, at 120 sites, amounting to 16.7% of the national network. Of the top five players, BP was the only top five retailers that decreased the number of sites with a car wash in its networks in 2016.
Avia has the largest service station network, at 600 sites, amounting to 17.5% of the national network. In 2016, three of the top five fuel retailers, divested their service station networks. The top five fuel retailers -COOP, BP, Migrol, Shell and Agrola accounted for 45.2% of service stations in Switzerland in 2016.
