This will help encourage spend on major DIY and gardening projects. Penetration in both DIY and gardening is highest among the older age groups who have greater experience and skills, especially within DIY. Retailers are investing in initiatives such as sponsoring popular TV programmes and opening smaller format stores in urban areas to attract younger shoppers and drive spend.

Quality and value for money are the most important purchase motivators for both DIY and gardening, especially among mature shoppers. These are closely followed by price. Convenience instore increased in importance, and we have seen many retailers investing in improving their store formats through improved signage, better use of lighting and space and more accessible layouts to enhance the customer experience.

Screwfix has seen its market share increase rapidly in DIY over the past five years up 5.2ppts, forecast to account for 8.1% of the UK DIY market in 2017.
