World Nonwovens Market to 2015 by Freedonia Group

Published : Jan-2012

World demand to rise 6.9% annually through 2015

Global sales of nonwoven fabrics are forecast to increase 6.9 percent annually through 2015 to 9.2 million metric tons. This rate is an acceleration from the 2005-2010 period, reflecting a low base as global recessionary conditions restrained nonwovens fabric demand in 2008 and 2009 before improving somewhat in 2010. Continued growth in global manufacturing and construction activity, as well as gains in personal income will promote demand. Product sales will grow faster in area terms, rising 7.3 percent per year to 198 billion square meters, reflecting a modest decrease in  average nonwovens weight. This will be due primarily to increased demand in
developing areas for a variety of lighter weight disposable nonwoven products, supported by manufacturers’ efforts to make them more affordable and technological advances that are making new generations of nonwoven fabrics lighter. In value terms, sales of nonwovens will expand slower because of a decline in average prices.

World Nonwovens Market

Developing areas to be fastest growing markets

Market gains in developing parts of Asia/Pacific, Eastern Europe, Africa/Mideast and Latin America will outpace demand in the US, Western Europe and Japan. Product sales in developing areas will be fueled by above-average economic growth, ongoing industrialization efforts and rising living standards. China alone will account for just over half of additional
global volume demand through 2015. Advances are also expected to be healthy in lower-volume markets such as India and Brazil.

Sales of roll goods in developed parts of the world will expand as well. Nonwovens demand in Western Europe will recover from a reduced 2010 base, stimulated by improved economic
climates, manufacturing output and consumer spending.

Spunmelt nonwovens to offer best growth prospects

Spunmelt nonwoven fabrics, which passed carded fabrics to account for the single largest share of total demand in 2010, will also post above-average gains through 2015, driven by growth in the use of disposable medical garments and textiles, rising consumption of composite   spunbonded/meltblown nonwoven fabrics that combine the performance advantages of each, and greater penetration of markets now served by competitive products. However, demand for airlaid nonwovens is projected to achieve the most rapid growth through the forecast period. Airlaid products are generally less expensive than competitive materials, and suppliers will benefit from increased use in a variety of disposable products..

Personal hygiene to remain largest market

The personal hygiene market — which includes adult incontinence products, feminine hygiene products, and infant diapers and training pants — will continue to account for the single largest share of nonwovens demand in 2015. Use of these goods will expand the fastest in developing
areas, fueled by growth in the number of women working outside the home and
higher standards of living. The construction and filtration product markets for nonwoven fabrics will record the most rapid gains through 2015, promoted by accelerating construction expenditures and an increase in manufacturing activity. The medical/surgical product market for nonwoven fabrics (excluding medical wipes) will also record above-average advances, spurred by an aging world population, continued growth in health care spending, and improved
infection prevention safeguards.

Study coverage

World Nonwovens, a new Freedonia industry study, is priced at $5900. It presents historical demand data (2000, 2005, 2010) plus forecasts for 2015 and 2020 by web formation process, market, application, world region and for 19 countries. Additional Information

This study analyzes global supply of and demand for nonwoven fabrics, defined here to include materials made from fibers, filaments and films that are arranged into webs, batts or sheets, then bonded together using mechanical, thermal or chemical means. Nonwovens are categorized by the web formation process used to produce the material: airlaid (paper- and textile-based),  carded, spunmelt (including meltblown and spunbonded) and wetlaid. The major markets for nonwoven fabrics are personal hygiene (diapers, sanitary pads, etc.), wipes, construction (geotextiles, roofing, etc.), filtration, medical/surgical (excluding medical wipes) and other (including batteries, carpets and rugs, clothing and motor vehicles). Study totals include captive production of nonwovens in downstream product manufacture, as well as goods sold on the merchant market.

Historical data for 2000, 2005 and 2010 and forecasts for 2015 and 2020 are provided for nonwoven fabric production (total), demand (by web formation process and by market) and net exports (total) on a country-by-country basis in thousands of metric tons. At the regional level, total demand is also shown in billions of square meters and in millions of current US dollars, including inflation. Breakouts of nonwovens demand by application (disposable or short life products versus nondisposable or long life products) are provided at the regional level as well. The term “demand” actually refers to “apparent consumption” and is defined as production (also referred to as “output,” “shipments” or “supply”) from a nation’s indigenous nonwoven fabric manufacturing facilities plus imports minus exports. It is used interchangeably with the terms “market,” “sales” and “consumption.”

Data on world nonwovens supply and demand are derived from differing sources and developed from statistical relationships. As a result, variations are commonplace in this type of international reporting, and consequently, statistics presented in this study are historically consistent but may differ from other sources. Variances may occur because of definitional differences, undistributed exports, inventory accumulation and goods-in-transit. To reduce the impact of such  discrepancies, total world nonwoven fabric imports and exports have been assumed to balance in any given year.

In addition, major global nonwovens manufacturers are identified and profiled, and the key competitive variables are discussed. The entire report is framed within the world nonwoven fabric industry’s economic, technological and market environments, and therefore environmental variables affecting nonwovens supply/demand patterns are emphasized. World nonwoven fabric market share data by company presented in the “Industry Structure” section are estimated based on consultation with multiple sources. In addition, tabular details may not always add to totals due to rounding.

Macroeconomic and demographic indicators presented in this study were obtained from The Freedonia Group Consensus Forecasts dated August 2011. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) historical data are derived from the national income and products accounts from the Organisation for Economic Co- Operation and Development (OECD) for its member countries, from the  European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for its member countries, and from the International Monetary Fund for its member countries that are not part of the OECD or EBRD. Sources of GDP estimates for other countries are based on information from the World Bank and a variety of sources including the countries’ statistical bureaus. GDP forecasts are developed from a consensus of public agencies and private firms.

All estimates of gross domestic product and components of GDP are done in terms of constant purchasing power parity in a benchmark year (2009) that is one year before the base year (2010) used in this study. Purchasing power parity GDP estimates for the benchmark year are obtained from the OECD, Eurostat, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the US Central Intelligence Agency and selected other sources. These purchasing power parity GDP estimates for the benchmark year are based on gross domestic product data expressed in the individual countries’ local currency, which are then converted to US dollars by valuing each country’s output at US prices in the benchmark year. This approach values the same physical output at a consistent price for all countries, thereby reducing the distorting influence of different price levels in the different countries. The alternative approach of using exchange rates to convert local currency GDP to US dollars would tend to overvalue the output of countries with high average price levels and undervalue the output of countries with low average price levels, because  exchange rate conversions only partially reflect the relative prices for goods and services that
are domestically consumed and invested. Furthermore, factors other than relative prices, such as demand and supply in currency markets, interest rates and capital flows, affect exchange rates.

Once the GDP values for a country are estimated for the benchmark year, we then calculate inflation-adjusted GDP for all other years for that country based on historical and forecast growth rates of GDP expressed in inflationadjusted units of that country’s local currency. This approach ensures that the GDP series for any given country is an accurate index of changes in   inflationadjusted GDP for that country. However, it also implicitly assumes that the price  structures across countries do not change from those of the benchmark year. Therefore, caution should be used in comparing the relative GDP of countries in years other than the benchmark year. If the ratio of prices across two countries in a given year differs from the ratio of prices across those countries in the benchmark year, then the change in the relative sizes of those two economies as measured will not accurately reflect changes in output.

The benchmark year is chosen to be one year prior to the base year for the study for reasons of data availability. One benefit of that choice is that the ratio of prices across countries in the base year is usually similar to that in the base year of 2010 is generally a reasonably accurate  representation of the relative sizes of their economies.

A wide variety of primary and secondary sources were used in the compilation of this report. These include national government statistical agencies; trade associations such as the Asian Nonwoven Fabrics Association (ANFA), European Disposable and Nonwovens Association (EDANA), and INDA, Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry; industry experts; financial sources; and nonwoven fabric company sources. The US Bureau of the Census, United Nations, European Union and various national government statistical publications were among the public sector data sources utilized.

Primary information was gathered through consultations with officers and marketing personnel of participating firms. Secondary data and background information were obtained from various  trade publications, including International Fiber Journal, Nonwovens Industry, Nonwovens  Markets and Textile World. Corporate annual reports, SEC Form 10-K filings, product literature and other company information were also used in framing the industry and market environments and as input for market size assessments.
