Lion Group to Purchase 40 Turboprop Aircrafts from French-Italian Aircraft Manufacturer ATR

2014-11-28
Published : Nov-2014

Lion Group of Indonesia is purchasing an additional 40 aircraft for $1 billion at list prices from ATR. The companies said that this move will make Lion Group the largest customer of the ATR.

Lion said that the acquisition order will be signed by Rusdi Kirana, Lion’s co-founder and Patrick de Castelbajac, CEO of ATR in the presence of Matteo Renzi, Italian Prime Minister in Rome, on Thursday.

One of the world’s fastest-growing airlines, Lion Air has captured global attention with record purchases of jets from Airbus and Boeing over the past few years. Airlines generally get large discounts from manufacturers on list prices.

Despite rival airlines postponing orders, Rusdi is pushing forward with Lion’s expansion plans and purchasing new planes to tap the country’s rapidly growing consumer class and also to compete with AirAsia of Malaysia.

Lion said that these additional 40 ATR 72-600s will be used to meet the growing demand forecast over the next five years both within the Group’s existing operators’ networks and to develop other opportunities for ATR operations throughout Asia and developing markets worldwide.

ATR is co-owned by Finmeccanica, Italian industrial conglomerate and Airbus group.

Lion Air has taken deliveries of more than 40 ATRs. The turboprop aircraft fly slowly compared to jets, however their lower fuel consumption is earning its popularity in growth markets such as Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Operating turboprops is playing an important role in Lion’s strategy to fly in remote locations in Malaysia and Indonesia. Deliveries of the turboprops from Thursday’s order will begin in 2017 and run till 2019. This latest deal increases Lion’s total ATR orders to 100.

These additional 40 ATR 72-600s will be utilized to meet the demand forecast for the next five years both to develop other opportunities for ATR operations throughout developing markets worldwide and Asia as well as within the Group’s existing operators’ networks.
