China’s container manufacture started in 1980. Its output and sales volume rank the first in the world since 1993. China becomes the largest container manufacture and sales center globally.
Presently, China is strongly capable of designing, manufacturing as well as installing and debugging container production lines on its own. The design and development abilities of new products and technologies constantly improve. Product varieties consist of common cargo containers, special cargo containers (insulated containers and tank containers), special regional containers, container semi-trailers and other varieties according to international and non-international standards.
More than 80 container manufacturers and supporting enterprises are scattered in South China, East China, North China and other coastal regions, among which about 90% are Sino-foreign joint enterprises or individual proprietorship. The differences of geographic positions and enterprise properties realize specialized services to meet demands of domestic and overseas clients.
In 2009, owing to the sharp decline of global economy and severe shrinking of world’s trade volume, the market demand for global containers encountered an unprecedented dilemma. From the beginning of early 2010, the output and sales volume of China’s container manufacture appear a recovery momentum. Since the second quarter of 2010, the demand of shipping industry and container leasing industry drastically increases and, exceeds the supply. In 2010, the output and sales volume of China’s containers was about 2,565,438 TEU.
Since 2011, the container market continuously develops with upward trends. In the wake of continuous steady rebound of the world economy, international trade and market demand, it is predicted that in the coming years, the output and sales volume of China’s containers will still keep a rising trend.
In 2011, the output of global containers was over 3.2 million TEU, among which dry boxes exceeded 2.7 million TEU, with an increase of nearly 10% YOY; refrigerated containers was about 150 thousand TEU and special containers was about 90 thousand TEU, with slight decline YOY respectively. The output of China’s containers accounts for over 90% of the global output. In 2011, the export amount of China’s containers was USD 11.4 billion. Among them, the export amount of 40 TEU containers is the largest, with the amount of USD 6.705 billion, accounting for 58.9%. In 2011, China’s containers were mainly exported to Asia, with the export amount of USD 4.401 billion, accounting for 38.6%, increased by 71.2% YOY. The export volume was 1,775.9 thousand, accounting for 54.9%, with an increase of 23.4% YOY.
